Title: Difference between 5Y3 & 5U4 families
Post by Rivieraranch on 11/04/09 at 13:19:36

I wanted to elicit comments about the difference between using the 5Y3 family of rectifiers in this unit as opposed to 5U4. I note that the Taboo is designed around the 5Y3. What is the difference electrically in substituting the 5U4 and what are the general differences in sound?

I have tried many different rectifiers in mine. I have settled on Russian NOS 5U4. The 5y3 family of tubes sound a little too mellow for my test. 5U4 has higher AC current draw( 3A vs 2A for 5y3) and gives better bass performance IMO.

Also, 5U4 has a little less forward voltage drop(~45V vs ~60V in 5y3). I loved the sound of Valve Art 274B but they don't last very long and currently out of production

This Valve Art—http://tubeman.com/item524.htm—or a different rendition?
