Title: 6N2P tubes in CSP2?
Post by Lon on 07/06/08 at 15:22:17

Anyone using 6N2P tubes in the CSP2?  Care to share impressions?

Steve. . . any thoughts on how these tubes impact the sound in comparison with 6N1P tubes?

Thanks!

Yes, I have some experience there believe it or not  ;)

6N2P's sound lush and organic in the CSP2, with about 1/2 the gain of the  stock tubes which are 6N1P's.  I find them rather pleasant, especially with digital as a source.  Much more forgiving.  However, the output impedance of the CSP2 will increase significantly (hence the less gain) and it absolutely will NOT drive a pair of headphones using 6N2P's.

So for line stage use only, 6N2P's give an interesting change to the signature of the preamp and can be tried in the CSP2.

Also, check the SE34I.2 forum, I posted a thread there regarding some new high grade 6N2P's that I will have soon.

Thanks for the information Steve!

As you know, I have a CSP2 without a headphone output, so . . . I may try those new tubes when available!

Steve, thanks for the info again, I've all 6N2Ps in the CSP2 now and the sound is richer and very nice.

A further update:  I also purchased two 6N2P tubes to add as the driver tubes to my SE34L Monoblock amps.  Well, these further transformed the system to a level of richness, more of a classic tube sound, which I must confess I seem to be looking for as when I get it I'm happy.  BUT one of the tubes was bad, very noisey with tube rush and even staccoto bursts of sound; more hash and noise was coming through than music.  So I'll soon have a replacement.  In the meantime I put a 6N1P into the driver position on the CSP2.  Even with only one 6N1P in the system, there is a distinct tightening and brigthening of the sound.  The difference between these two tube types in the system is NOT subtle.

Lon,

Are you rewiring the socket to use the 6N2P in the CSP2?
If no, do you think buzz https://www.decware.com/cgi-bin/yabb22/YaBB.pl?num=1215007328 also put it in position 1 of the ZP3 without any modification?
So the 6N2P can replace either a 6N1P or a 12AX7? (12AX7 I knew, but I thought you had to rewire the socket)

Thanks for your comment

Can't speak for Buzz.  I haven't been informed that I NEEDED to make any modifications, and I certainly wouldn't be able to do so, I'm not schooled in that.  NO, no rewiring on my part.

This tube does reduce the output I guess of the preamp, but that's no problem in my system.

Hi Pierre-Alain,

My Zp3 has been modified to accept the 6n*p types of tubes. The original Zp3 only accepts 12**7 types. However the mod is easy... the only pin difference between the 6n2p and 12AX7 is one heater pin. The addition of a simple switch allows the use either pin arrangement.

In the CSP2 preamp the 6n1p is interchangeable with the 6n2p with no modifications. Have fun.  ;)
