Title: Alernate tuning absorption materials
Post by rcb on 03/06/08 at 20:53:28

Hello People

I have a question regarding using alternate absorption materials in my HDT's with Alternate Tuning.

On the DECWAR design sheet nd from comments from you guys you are using the eggcrate and multilayer type foams at various locations in the boxes.
I have access to all types of sound absorpsion materials from foams to tar based stick on barrier materials (different thicknesses as well) to a cotton shotty base automotive types of all thicknesses.
I was thinking of using a 45 to 50mm thick cotton shotty material to replace the eggcrate
type and 10-15m thick cotton shotty material to replace the multi layer foam.

Is the name of the game all absorption and dampening all of the backwave frequencies where the foam is applied or is this aimed at canceling only certain frequencies ??
The stuff I can get is an awsome absorber and dampener very light and eas to work with/glue ect and best of all its free!!!!

Any comments ?????

Thanks in advance

Rodney,

If your replacing the egg crate foam, already in the speakers, then try any of the above mentioned, then let us all know what worked and what it sounded like with each. We've found th egg crate to be just right, which is why we use it.
You don't need to absorb all frequencies  in the box, that would be a little hard to do, and would probably sound like crap.

Not trying to reinvent the wheel but what other materials have you guys tried/liked/disliked ect ?????

Why the use of the multi layer foam instead of a thinner peice of open cell or a shallower section of eggcrate ????

Rodney,

We only use egg crate foam, in the overall scheme of things, its really not that much. Just a few places it made the most difference. Do you have a pair that has the multi layer foam?

It would be hard to say what was tried, we do try a lot in a lot of different speakers, I personally have have never been much at taking notes. The original HDT's Steve built and the HDT MKII have nothing inside.

I plan on building a set of alternate tuned HDT's but have only gone as far as downloading the plans and pestering Seve and the rest of you guys with different questions. I have a set of phase guides, surrounds for my fe206e's and 4 of the PR's currently on order from DECWARE so the answer is no  I do not have a pair with multilayer foam. That came from reading (maybe incorrectly) on the blog about the foam used in the home brew builds.

The cost is not a problem just looking to see if I can use what I already have.

Thanks for your help Bob
