Title: 6E5P in Taboo?
Post by ark on 11/24/07 at 23:17:18

Can I use the 6E5P tube in the Taboo? Has anyone tried this?

A look at the 6e5p data sheet says no.  The Russian type to use in a Taboo is the 6p14p-ev, AKA EL84M.

Or the 6n15n-ev  (military SV83--cryoed---my fave).

Dude,

Be very careful about using a 6p15p-ev in a pentode mode amp.  A look at the data sheet will show you that the screen grid is FRAGILE.

Are you prepared to make the modifications needed to provide the requisite, regulated, 150 V. screen grid B+?

Perhaps you're right, Eli, (you certainly know more stuff than me) but Steve does state the Taboo as designed for either the sv83 or el84.

I heard a Taboo with just those tubes (cryoed military sv83) and thought it was very cool sounding.

These are in the "Master Catalog".
6P15P-EV Russian (military SV83)

These are also what I used in my Sig Mono's when I had them.

Guys,

When it's triode wired, the screen grid of a 6p15p is tied to the plate by a 1 KOhm resistor.  That resistor protects against excessive screen grid heating.  I don't know if Steve is protecting the screen grids of the O/P tubes in a Taboo.  Ask the man, directly, and find out for certain.

Anyway, the owner of a bunch of cryoed 6P15P-EV's (military SV83) is selling them in the classifieds, here.

The cryoed version of this tube is quite awesome, in my mind. I may buy a few more from his stock.

Yes, perfectly safe to use the SV83 (6P15P-EV) tubes in a Taboo.  In the taboo this is usually a warmer sounding tube and the EL84's are typically a bit more aggressive (but in a good way).  This is the exact opposite of what happens in our triode amps btw.  In those, the SV83 is faster and more detailed, while the EL84 is a tad warmer and a touch less detailed.
