Model DEC-685

DECWARE Modified SACD/DVD/CD player with
class A tube output stage.

NOTICE:

Sony has discontinued the DVD-685 player.  We still offer this mod to existing units.  If you don't own one, they show up frequenty on ebay.

This SACD player features a single ended triode output stage where the tube is visible and accessible from the rear.  It uses a dual triode (12AU7) and may be rolled with 12AT7 and 12AX7 tubes as well.  This is probably the most popular of all signal tubes making them easy to acquire with a large variety to choose from.

A new pair of gold/Teflon high quality output jacks are also installed on the rear representing the tubed output.  The stock output jacks are still active.  That comes in handy sometimes if for no other reason then to A/B the stock output stage with the added tube output stage.  Huge difference.

The tube stage features it's own power supply. It comes on when the player is plugged in.  It remains on 24hrs a day so it's always properly warmed up and ready to play at all times. The player itself turns on and off with the power button or remote.

When paired up with the 24/192KHz DAC, this tube output stage makes this player into a true audiophile source.

The Decware mods to this player involve installing a tube output stage that completely replaces the stock output stage by connecting directly to the 24/192 DAC chip.

The tube stage is triode, run in class A, single-ended and uses no negative feedback.  We were able to leave the stock output stage un-touched and fully functional.  You can use either or both.

The output of the tube stage is slightly higher then stock ensuring plenty of dynamics and weight.  The entire tube stage is wired point-to-point on the back of the tube socket with no circuit boards. The tube plugs into the back of the player making tube rolling easy since you don't have to take any covers off.

Below are the factory specifications of the Sony player which remain unchanged by our modifications.

  • Precision Cinema Progressive™ Technology: Other DVD players detect image changes at the scan line level-Sony's Precision Cinema Progressive (PCP) system detects them at the pixel level. The picture is more faithful to the source-whether film or video-because separate, optimized algorithms are used to handle the differing pixel behavior. Separate algorithms are also used to process the moving and still parts of an image, resulting in sharp backgrounds with moving objects that are free from motion artifacts.
  • Precision Drive™ 2 System: Past generations of Precision Drive were only able to compensate for warped discs by moving the entire optical block, which took more time and limited the amount of correction possible.
  • Sony's new Precision Drive 2 system simplifies the process by moving the lens-instead of the entire optical block-for faster and more accurate error correction.
