MINI TORII AND 6K6GT TUBES
08/24/10 at 02:24:49
I popped in some early 1950's Westinghouse smoked glass 6K6GT along with some 1950's Tung Sol 6X4W rectifiers; the kind with the bright metal spacer that separates the plates from one another. Compared with the 6Y6's I tried these are more laid back and the soundstage is narrower and less deep. Also the unit does not get so hot.

Don't forget that any time you roll output tubes, the sound you hear will be largely dictated by the input tube. That means often times you'll have to roll input tubes again.

Right now I have been using a pair of special 1958 Sylvania made tubes under contract to Bendix. They are 12AU7/6189 with black plates and unique construction. Maybe I have to bump the input up to a 12AT7 to see what effect that has.

I have kept the unit on continuously for a week now. The chassis is warm, not hot to the touch. I have the 6K6's in place with 1956 JAN Sylvania 12AT7's in front. I find I can turn the volume all the way up and it is not too loud. I think a 12AX7 in front would bring up the volume a bit. But I am almost through futzin' around with these 6K6's.

The 12AX7 does not raise the volume very much over a 12AT7. I think the limitations in the 6K6 tube are such that it would be good in an office settling or wherever a quieter presentation is needed. This is a testament to the versatility of the Mini Torii.
