Feedback about your kits

Folks,

Just a note that the re-edge kit below was installed successfully by me about a month ago.  Repaired an old pair of 1981 12" Pioneer 4 way speakers.  The foam surrounds in the woofers were rotted.  The woofers now sound like new!!  I can hardly believe the renewed sound!  This was my first speaker re-edging project.

I believe the success was in part due to your excellent instructions on-line and also the 1 page note that came with the foam surrounds.  The voice coil shimming step in your procedure is absolutely paramount for a successful job.  Also reasonably clean/straight gluing surfaces and careful, uniform application of glue - but you already know that!

My background.  Retired electronics communications engineer with US Navy and Army.  Auto mechanics are an old hobby.  Been around audio amplifiers & radio transmitters/receivers (both tube & transistor) since the mid 1960s.  Still a licensed ham.  In college and after, used to repair (for a few bucks) blown guitar and stereo amplifiers - the causes were many (spilled drinks were the most common).  Had a lot of fun with that back then.  The recent speaker repair job was new to me, but I took my time to get it right the first time at my work bench.

Probably would have thrown out those old Pioneer speakers had it not been for your kit and again your, great instructions..  One question:  Does the 40+ hour break in time really improve the bass response of newly repaired woofers, or is it just psychological?

Many thanks and Happy Holidays!!   Greg Simmermacher

PS---Hope I am not boring you all with this speaker repair message of victory!

Hi Greg,

Thanks for the feedback!  The 40 hours is a real thing.  As the foam edge breaks in the compliance changes, and the fs drops.  Right now it's probably 5 to 15 Hz higher than it will be.  Since the cabinet is tuned specifically for the original driver's compliance, it has to be spot on for the bass to be right.
