I plan to build a 24" x 36" WO using Infinity 850W's. I want to fit the box under the package tray of a Crown Vic. The only problem is that the height in the tray area is only 11 1/4" which means that I will have side panels only 9 1/2" high. Will the loss of a half an inch compromise the performance of the box and is the 850W a good choice for this application. TIA

J_Rock Ex Member	Re: Building an eight inch WO Reply #1 - 08/14/06 at 22:57:02 Infinity makes some great subs, although I have no experience with their 9 inch version, I can recommend them as a companys. As far as the height- make it as large as you can fit and you shouldn't have a problem.

Well I have almost completed the box, I'm now just waiting for the drivers to arrive so I can finish it off. Here are some pics.

I was able to make the box out of only 1 4' X 8' piece of 3/4" MDF board. I had the store do all of the major cuts and cut the rest using a Skill saw with a 40 tooth carbide blade. The box is really heavy. Once the drivers are in I don't think anyone will be carting it away without help.

I have another question. I just measured the sealed volume behind the driver and I came up with a volume of .61 cubic feet. When I checked the speaker spec's I find the recommended box size to be .35 cubic feet for a sealed enclosure and .54 cubic feet for a bandpass enclosure. Is the actual volume close enough to the recommended value or should I reduce the box volume? The speaker spec's are; Qts .42, Vas .61 and Fs 28,8. For the record I am SQ person, I leave the SPL to my son.

i would try it the way it is first, and if its a little 'boomy' then put some blacks of wood in the sealed area to make the sealed volume closer to munfacturers specks, but i dont think you will need to, the larger sealed area my just allow the drivers to play lower and louder with less power.

Thanks for the response. Lee you made a good point I had forgotten to include the speaker. It looks like it will work out. I also added a few pieces, after reading a post by DirtDawg in another thread, to smooth the sharp corners in the horn. (See Pic)

I also radiused the sharp edges and the mouth of the horn. All I need now is my drivers.

I just got the drivers a few days ago and I have just installed them. I haven't received my threaded inserts yet so I am testing the speaker without the top on flipped over on the rug in the living room. So far the speaker is sounding great. I have been noticing the break in of the drivers as I'm listening, every so often I have to adjust the subwoofer volume down as the drivers free up. Overall so far so good.

Well I finally got the box finished three weeks ago. Installing 50 6mm threaded inserts to hold the top on was a royal pain in the butt. The end result looks good though, but it sounds even better. I have been testing the sub in my home theater system. Yesterday I watched Master And Commander and I was amazed at the tight solid hard hitting bass that comes out of this speaker. It just blows my 12 inch 350 watt ported cube out of the water. :D The final consensus is that the cube has to go. My only remaining question is whether to build a WO32 or another WO (10" this time) for the home theater. I can't wait to get this in the car. I will have some pictures later.

But who am I to talk I just finished a 12" WO32 because the scrap lumber I had was only 24x33. Yes I was bored! If the lumber was bigger it would have been a 36x36 WO
